'Lightning flashed while thunder drummed. He saw the figure in the distance. It was the hound.
Ichabod fell behind one of the hay piles. His hands prickled as the sharp strands dug into his flesh. The strong animal smells made his head swim. Summer whinnied in panic, and Dainty mooed lowly.
Ichabod heard the hound’s panting breaths and the scrape of its claws. It strode past the barn animals, intent on Ichabod. The creature’s nostrils curled as it smelt him. Its tongue hung from its mouth as it panted, splatters of drool staining the straw strewn floor.
Ichabod searched for anything that he could use as a weapon, but there were no tools lying around. All he had was his own fingernails. He turned back to the front of the barn -
To find the hound nose to nose with him.'
When a child goes missing, Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman must unravel local lore and sift through the bitter memories of two warring families to discover if the thief is human or the ghost of a Hessian hound.
